The Ashland County Dog Shelter takes in stray dogs or dogs brought in by the dog warden. The dogs are held for a set time before being claimed by the owner or vaccinated and put up for adoption. The dog warden and staff are employed by the county commissioners and tasked with enforcing Ohio Revised Code 955, which does not include animals other than dogs.
Please note: The Humane Society of Ashland County is a separate non-profit organization that handles animal neglect and abuse cases.

"Forever Homes Bring Joy to Dogs and Families"
"My wife and I could not be happier with our new member of the family/pack. We had recently lost our beloved cattle dog, Bluebell after sharing 18 years together she passed holding in our arms. This event left a large emotional hole in our lives. It must have been Bluebell to send us Foxy to help us fill that void.
We saw Nylah/Foxy online at the Ashland Shelter and she looked what we were looking for in a companion- an adult, very loving, medium sized, female cattle dog needing a loving home after being left. We visited the shelter where the staff were VERY friendly and helpful. They provided us with a warm welcome, good/accurate (best possible) information and enthusiasm for the work and hope for finding a home for one of their guests. Foxy was at the shelter for approximately 1-2 months and as observed was just stressed over the entire change of life- and who wouldn't be. Shannon, a staff employee as was all the staff, was so gentle, knowledgeable, professional and understanding in the event it was heartwarming to see the emotional connection to the dog as well as their sincere hope that we would have the RIGHT fit for Foxy - as we did. We strolled outside for a walk which was perfect and then requested to take her home overnight for further evaluation. Paperwork was completed and we left with Foxy. Overnight Foxy was just wonderful, the house seemed to be filled again with love, and she accumulated well to her new surroundings. The following day we returned, completed the paperwork for final adoption, paid the fee and was provided with a bag of goodies for Foxy. She was chipped for tracking/identification, spayed and were given all applicable shots/vaccinations as part of the adoption. Our recent visit to our vet told us that she was in great condition and even needed to lose a pound or two like her new owners. Note: the shelter has a wonderful option for those who adopt a dog for some free training which we plan on doing.
My wife is a retired nurse after 40+ years and I am a retired businessman who after 40+ years has had to make many business decisions and personal evaluations. Living life and just dealing with people skills arise where you can make honest evaluations of places and people pretty well.
We both can only offer our highest praise and recommendation for using the Ashland Dog Shelter. We both found the physical shelter to be clean and well managed. We found the adoption experience to be GREAT, easy to do and that the entire staff, from the management, clerical, and kennel members were each so nice, courteous, friendly, caring, helpful, knowledgeable, and professional nothing could have been better. Foxy has found her forever home and we have found our new family member".
